Two recent releases are worth attention because they move AI from generic chat into sensitive, practical contexts: personal health information and classroom work. Neither should be treated as an autonomous expert. The useful question is whether its controls, access rules, and review process fit your situation.
ChatGPT Health: a U.S. rollout with optional connected data
On July 23, OpenAI began rolling out Health in ChatGPT to logged-in users aged 18 and over in the United States. It is available on web and iOS across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. It is not available in Codex.
Health lets a user choose to connect Apple Health and supported medical-record sources, then use that information to understand trends, prepare for an appointment, or make sense of a result in context. Connecting data is optional: a person can still ask health questions without it.
What the privacy controls actually say
OpenAI says connected medical records, Apple Health information, and conversations that use those sources are not used to train its foundation models or target ads. Health data receives additional encryption protections. By default, ChatGPT asks before using connected medical-record or Apple Health information in a response; users can keep those prompts or change the setting.
Disconnecting an account starts deletion of data synced from that source from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days. That does not remove information already written into a separate conversation history; those conversations must be deleted separately. Connected records can also be incomplete or out of date, so the original medical record remains the source to check.
The boundary that matters
OpenAI describes Health as support for understanding information and preparing for care—not a replacement for a clinician. That is the correct frame. Use it to turn a visit note into plain language, prepare questions, or organize a timeline. Do not use it to self-diagnose, decide whether an urgent symptom can wait, change medication, or replace professional medical advice.
For people who do connect data, a sensible first step is narrow: link one source, ask it to summarize a recent document you can independently read, and keep permission prompts enabled. Do not turn a convenience setting into blanket access before you know how you want the system to use sensitive context.
Claude for Teachers: a free individual offer for verified U.S. K–12 educators
Anthropic announced Claude for Teachers on July 14. Verified K–12 educators in the United States can sign up by June 30, 2027 for a year of free premium Claude access. The offer is for individual educators, not yet a school- or district-wide product.
The product includes teaching skills and a Learning Commons connector. Anthropic says that connector links lesson planning to academic standards in all 50 states and to curriculum resources including OpenSciEd and Illustrative Mathematics. It also supports connections to several education tools, such as Canva Education, Diffit, MagicSchool, and TeachFX.
Where it could save time
The strongest use cases are bounded, reviewable work: creating a first lesson-plan draft, adapting a resource for different readiness levels, preparing practice material, or organizing non-sensitive class information into planning notes. The output should still be checked for subject accuracy, local curriculum fit, accessibility, and whether it reflects the teacher’s own classroom judgment.
Anthropic says the service includes Claude Code and Cowork, which can support scheduled or multi-step work. That increases the value of a careful setup: before connecting files or scheduling a recurring task, decide exactly what data is needed and what output a human will review.
Student data is not a casual upload
Anthropic says Claude for Teachers data is not used for model training and that student information is covered by its K–12 Data Processing Addendum. However, Anthropic also says that whether and how educational data may be used is determined by district and state policies.
That means a teacher should confirm local approval before uploading rosters, assessments, individualized education information, or other student records—even if a product advertises privacy protections. Start with de-identified or synthetic examples where possible, and keep a human responsible for educational decisions.
The practical takeaway
These releases are not interchangeable product features. ChatGPT Health is a personal, U.S.-only health-information experience with optional sensitive-data connections. Claude for Teachers is a U.S. educator offer designed for planning and instructional support.
In both cases, the best starting point is a limited, reversible task with clear human review. The question is not whether the AI can produce a plausible answer. It is whether you can verify the result, understand the data boundary, and safely decide what happens next.
